“Lives of great men all remind us

We can make our lives sublime.”

—Longfellow

Great men like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Leo Tolstoy, Rabindra Nath Tagore, Ram Kishan Paramhans, Swami Dayanand, Vivekanand, Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, Mahatama Gandhi, Pt. Nehru, to name a few, who were the embodiment of truth, toil, tolerance, faith, peace, love, sympathy, philanthropy, patriotism, etc, remind us that we can make our lives sublime by following into their footprints.

The character of great men is like that of trees, which provide shade for the benefit of others, and while they themselves stand in the sun and bear the scorching heat, they produce fruit by which others profit. Others before self is the motto of great men indeed. They never attach importance to their perishable body and, as we have seen particularly in the case of Bhagat Singh, Raj Guru and Sukhdev, they lay down their lives for others.

On account of their qualities of head and heart, the great men serve as a beacon  light and a never-failing source of inspiration. They guide the misguided people on the right path. They enlighten innumerable ignorant people so that they may experience everlasting happiness. They inspire people to always remember and follow lines like:

“The woods are lovely, far and deep

But I have promises to keep

And miles to go before I sleep

And miles to go before I sleep.”

  • Robert Frost

Since we live in deeds, not in years, greatness can  be achieved through noble deeds in a short span of life also. To scale the heights of glory in life, a long life is not essential. As says Ben Jonson in his poem ‘The Noble Nature’, a lily, which blooms only for a day in May, is far better for its beauty and charm than a long oak tree, which, of course, lives for three hundred years but ultimately whithers and falls like a log of wood. A short but eventful life is greater than a big but useless life indeed.

Similarly, in his short period of life (1964-2009), Sh. Vaneet Chawla, alias Lucky, the loved one of all with his watchword ‘Tera, Tera, Tera’, rose to the heights of a great man through his selfless services and good deeds for the noble cause of humanity. With the blessings of Shiromani 108 Sant Baba Nikka Singh Ji Maharaj ‘Virakt’ and the fruitful inspiration of his respected father, his ideal, now known as Sant Amrik Dev Ji, he founded a secular, unique humanitarian Trust in the fond memory of his grand parents, Bhagat Labha Mal and Mata Kartar Kaur, at Nirmal Dham, Model Town, Karnal on August 14, 1997.

Soon the generosity of the social-service oriented Trust, i.e, Bhagat Labha Mal Kartar Kaur Charitable Trust, the sole objective of which was to help the poor and needy, the destitute and abandoned, led to the establishment of Bhagat Labha Mal Bridh Ashram, Mata Kartar Kaur Bal Kalyan Niketan, Mata Kartar Kaur Memorial Library and Aarthic Sewa Kendra. All these service-centres are presently rendering their philanthropic services absolutely free of cost under the divine patronage of His Holiness Mahant Baba Ram Singh Ji Maharaj, the embodiment of selfless service, devotion, compassion and love.
